Sorry for the Silent Treatment!
Well, it's been 10 days since my last blog because we've been very preoccupied.
It's a Good News, Bad News story...
As of yesterday, I would have been 10 weeks pregnant. Initially finding out just before Halloween. I took a pregnancy test, well...3 actually, all positive AFTER I had that dreadful hair do, where my hair "magically"
turned black. Irony, or Old Wives Tale?? Hmm...Anyway, Mark and I were very excited about it and infact, we did tell Tegan, which I guess we won't do next time...but she would touch my belly and say "baby..sleeping."
Anyway, I went in for my routine visit with the Dr. and had the pap done. He said I would spot for a few days but nothing more. And so I did as he said. That was a Fri/Sat/Sun. Then Monday it all disappeared, but by Wednesday night after church it re-appeared. Same stuff, nothing major, "old blood".
This went on till over the weekend, and I called the Dr. and went in on the Tuesday. He had me in right away for an ultrasound the next day and assured me all that it was probably something minor like Placenta Previa or a blood clot or something.
I got his call Thursday morning that there was a possibility that it WAS a Partial Molar Pregnancy. That the baby was smaller than it should be, and they thought they saw some scar tissue in the uterus. Of course he told me I'd worry, but not to worry, that we'll get in touch with my OB and get answers right away. Except, she didn't respond to their endless calls, faxes...nothing.
Now after researching all day/night Thursday and sending myself into internet oblivion and scaring the wits out of myself. I researched that a P.Molar Pregancy is better than a plain Molar, but that this Molar tissue can be stubborn and even after a D&C, remain and continue to grow in the uterus, hence needing the use of chemo pills to kill it. And also waiting a year to try to get pregnant again...
Since my mother died of Ovarian Cancer, you can't help but think the worst and try to hide it from your family. No one (except a few of you, and you know who you are!) knew about the pregnancy. However, now it was time to tell our parents about the bad news and for them to pray for us. It's kindive like this: If you try to break 1 pencil with both hands, it'll break. But if you hold 10 pencils in your hand, they won't break. Too strong. Sometimes, the more really is better!
In a time of just starting my Christian Faith in the last year, this is when you are happy you've invested in it. Thursday night, I went to bed and prayed. Aloud. Prayed to the Lord that he lift these worries I have and decide what to do. Help me get better and be strong. And of course, Say Hi to Mom for me!
I must say that Friday, I woke up and said nothing. I didn't think of it all day. I didn't talk about it. Nothing. It was a good feeling. Truly, there's nothing you can do about it anyway. You can stay in bed, or stand on your head, but if it's not meant to be, it's just not.
The more I talked to friends that had had miscarriages, especially a D&C, which is where they clean out your uterus of the fetal material...yuck. Or a "dusting and cleaning" which is a nicer term, I was kindive looking forward to it. A fresh start. So hopefully, next time, I won't have any hesitations of anything left behind etc.
Okay, so Friday came and went. No apts with my OB. Have to go the whole weekend now not knowing a damn thing. Still in the dark. In the meantime, I feel pregnant. Feel fine.
Monday comes. By 10:30a.m, I've called the Dr. and they said they've given up on my OB (who delivered Tegan BTW), and they asked if I minded being sent to someone in Burlington who would take me right away. NO PROBLEM. I'll take what I can get. Just put my mind at ease, one way or the other.
Atleast, I've also had some time to think about the miscarriage and be able to come to term with it. Some women, they hear a heartbeat at 10 weeks, everything's fine and come 12 or 14, they'd lost it weeks before and never knew. Atleast I had warning.
Did I tell you we heard a heartbeat the Wed before? Yeah, but I thought it was my own. Gon Gon.....Gon Gon...very slow. It should have been a horse galloping in Texas. Or my heart standing next to Matthew McConauhey...b'ding b'ding b'ding!!
Anyway, my Dr. calls me back with minutes to say I had an apt THAT afternoon (MONDAY..are you following me so far...that was THIS Monday.) Mark and I went and we had a consultation. He reviewed what was faxed and ruled out right away the Molar. Good News. But that I was looking like I was on my way out to a miscarriage. Bad News. The heartbeat was only 90 bpm and it should be between 120 and 160.
We left there with an apt for Wednesday, yesterday, for another ultrasound. To see if anything grew, stayed the same or infact, died. This time I was able to see the screen, but I couldn't even see a fetus. That'll happen when your upside down! It was there, but there was no heartbeat. It had died.
Actually, I have to tie in another ironic story...as I left for the ultrasound apt, I drove to the end of my street, turned right and was on Morrison and I said outloud in the car, "Well Lord, it's do or die today, yay or nay." And just then a squirrel ran out in front of me and I hit it. I looked in the rear view and saw it. I felt the bump, but seeing it was worse. Then I said outloud "Well there's my sign. Thanks anyway."
I went upstairs, back to the OB's office and waited for the results. I didn't cry and I really was okay. Sure enough, he told me what I knew and was having me scheduled for a D&C for today, (Thursday). Coming home, I started to cry talking to Rosie. Some friends say just the right thing and it tips you over the edge. Hormones, whatever! What an idiot! Then I was done. Tegan just burst into my arms when I got home, and then your too busy to think about it again. Makes you happy for what you have!
Thursday:
I'm not allowed to eat or drink or even have a lozenge they said before my surgery after midnight last night. I was debating going to church because the smell of fresh coffee would be cast upon me like a spell not to mention the home made goodies they brought. And might I add, usually made of flour which is doubly sinful for me!!
But I went, it passed the morning and I got lots of support. Wouldn't have changed a thing about today. Not one.
Mark picked me up at home, and Tegan had "Retta" come over and watch her. Mark was telling me just how good his sandwhich was at lunch and instead he almost got a knuckle sandwich of my own! I was hungry!! He apologized!
I was having fun the whole time at the hospital. Being a cracker! When the nurse came to admit me, Mark had to stay behind and wait till she was done before he could join me and wait in yet "another room". So she said "his name is Mark right?" and I said yes, but call "Stud Muffin and see if he comes". So she did! He comes in with her, red as a cherry! We all laughed. And if we all know Mark, we know it would have gone right over his head like a 747! "Who me?? No, you've got the wrong guy. I'm not a stud!"
Then when it was time to go, Mark couldn't stop kissing me Goodbye. I don't know if he was afraid to leave me, that something would happen, or that he could go to Canadian Tire without me and buy Christmas lights without me bickering! (He really did go there while I was in surgery y'know!)
ANYWAY, so as she's wheeling me around, we pass this guy in a suit who's got a cart with hot chocolate, apple cider and an array of cookies. My mouth flew open in aghast! Mmm...I cried out "Can I have one?" and the nurse laughed and scolded the guy to hide that cart that it wasn't fair to the patients who hadn't eaten since yesterday!
My OB Dr. came to say Hi. First thing I asked was if he stopped for a cookie. He smiled and opened his left hand to reveal the chocolate chip cookie, that looked more like Big Mac meal to me. We laughed.
Next they wheeled me into the operating room. They work so fast in there. As they injected the sleeping aid, they said "Goodnight, have a nice sleep!" I said, "Matthew McConauhey, here I come!" I heard some chuckles and that was it.
I swear, I just fell asleep, and it was time to get up. I woke with them talking about Christmas shopping. I don't know what I said. Something like that I didn't see Matthew. They said "rarely do you fall into sleep that allows you to dream" Darn it anyway.
Apparently the whole proceedure took 8 to 10 minutes! I heard it was to be 20 to 30 minutes. Then I found out I was the last operation of the day....hmmm....no wonder it was so fast. Then I asked the nurse if he used a Shop Vac to do it! She smiled and assured me no.
I got a popsicle for my sore throat, but was pain free and its after 11p.m now as I'm writting this blog. Another lady named "Kim" was brought in beside me in Recovery. I overheard that she had a Gall Bladder operation. When she looked over at me happily eating my orange popsicle, I said, "Hi Kim!" She smiled and said Hello back, but was probably wondering who the hell I was!
Then I got to leave Recovery after an hour. Mark was reunited with me. He thought I was doing incredibly well and was happy too. He was disappointed that Canadian Tire was out of Christmas light bulb holders for the ground but got over it quickly! Then he was asking me if I wanted the new garage cabinets, to open to the left, or right or how. Another knuckle sandwich was about to surface, when I kindly reminded him that I was hungry and didn't give a damn about the cabinets right now...I mean sweetie pie.
All was well, when they tried to discharge me and found out that I was supposed to have some RH blood work done PRIOR to surgery. Oops! Someone dropped the ball. Luckily I was negative and was sent home after an hour and a half of waiting for the lab results. Sheesh!
We got take out on the way home and Tegan was becoming a handful for Loretta. Poor Loretta was having hot flashes and having to deal with a toddler! Way to go Retta!
So I'm off to bed. My ass feels like it's a pancake from sitting on it all day. Not to mention the chocolate chip cookies and Quality Street chocolates I had in bed watching my shows tonight. That'll be the "syrup" on top of them....you have to milk it a little!!
When I came out of the bedroom LOOKING for the chocolates, I got light headed and saw stars. I told Mark this, and turned on my heels with my box of chocolates in my hand and said "well, these will help ground me!"
He laughed!
In closing, I just wanted to thank everyone for thier support. Wisdom teeth apparently classes as surgery, but this was my first real surgery. And it went well. It gets me over the fear of Hospitals since my mother's long term stay. The smell, the beeps, the sound of oxygen masks...
I also want to thank the Lord for allowing me to come to Him for assurance and faith. For him to be the Rock. Weather I sit, lean or just "talk to" when you don't know which way to turn. My spiritual journey has just begun with You, and may it lead to a strong and fullfilling ministry with You. May my courage with this story reach out and comfort others or simply give them a chuckle they desperately needed. Or put things in perspective in their homes. Thank you Lord, for comforting me and supporting me in this difficult time.
In all these things I pray,
Amen
Don't forget to tip the waitress....I'm here all week!!
Connie:)
